Fundamentals of Extension and Extension Education /2020

Extension-


The word 'extension is derived from the Latin roots 'ex' meaning 'out' and tension meaning 'stretching'.

Extension is that type of education which is stretched out to people in the rural areas far and near, beyond the limits of the educational institutions to which the formal type of education is usually confined.

Education is an integral part of extension. Because of this, and because of the fact that extension is pursued in agriculture and many other disciplines to educate, motivate and change the behaviour of the people, this particular branch of science is also known as extension education.

The Land Grant The term extension was first used in the United States of America in the first Colleges to the farmers through the process of informal education.

 In India, the terms community development & extension education became more popular with the launching f Community Development Projects in 1952 and with the establishment of the National Extension Service in 1953.


Since then, Community development has been regarded as a programme for an all-round development of the rural people & extension education.


Differences between Formal Education & Extension Education-


Formal Education-


The teacher starts with theory & works up to practical.

Students study subjects.

Students must adapt themselves to the fixed I curriculum offered.

Authority rests with the teacher.

Class attendance is compulsory.

Teacher instructs the students.

Teaching is only through instructors.

Teaching is mainly vertical.

The teacher has more or less homogeneous audience.

It is rigid It has all pre-planned & predecided programmes

It is more theoretical.


Extension Education-


to The teacher (extension worker) starts with practical & may take up theory later on.

Farmers study problems.

farmers help to formulate the curriculum.

Authority rests with the farmers.

Participation is voluntary.

Teacher teaches & also learns from the farmers.

Teaching is also through local leaders.

Teaching is mainly horizontal ence. The teacher has a large & heterogeneous audience.

It has no fixed curriculum or course of study & the



Objectives of Extension Education-

 The fundamental objective of extension education is the development of the people. Agricultural extension in our idt country is primarily concerned with the following main objectives. The objectives of extension education are the expressions of the ends towards




Extension education stresses on the two-way process of learning in view of the teaching that takes place on the problem-oriented subjects confronting.

Extension education believes in and advocates for "helping people to help themselves" based on the concept of "learning by doing". the client system.

including improved seeds, fertilisers, implements, pesticides, improved cultured  practices, dairying,

 (1) The dissemination of useful & practical information relating to agriculture, a whole.

 (2) The practical application of useful knowledge to farm & home;
